Chinese is an Asian Language which employs a script radically different from European alphabets. For this reason some of the procedures
adopted for its most efficient learning will differ from those adopted for the study of other languages.
• Modern Standard Chinese, also known as Mandarin or Putonghua, forms the basis of the written language and should therefore be taught to
students.
• The Hanyu Pinyin system of romanisation should be taught to ensure accuracy in pronunciation and to establish a foundation for using
dictionaries arranged according to that system.
• Standard simplifications to the Chinese script have been in general use in China since 1956. To promote a more rapid development in
literacy skills, it is recommended that standard simplifications be taught; this however, does not preclude students from using full form
characters if they so desire.
This syllabus is designed for an overall target population of general beginners. The specification of grammar, vocabulary and topics in this
syllabus is designed to ensure that the goals to be mastered are clearly defined and attainable by students. The study of the recommended
cultural topics will provide insight into aspects of Chinese life, history and geography.

Homework
Homework is a means of consolidation, extension or enrichment of the work that is studied in Chinese lessons. Homework is set regularly and is a compulsory part of a student's workload. Homework is followed up regularly, and students found to be neglecting to complete their homework will have a note sent home (N-award warning letter), informing their parents/carers of the situation, and encouraging completion of the work in question.
